Roll With It
Instructor: Michelle Ward

Learn to create interesting painterly surfaces with layers of texture, pattern, and color. We will brush, brayer, scrape, stamp and spray to create an informative dossier of over twenty techniques on a twenty-five foot roll of paper. Day one is focused on the process, and is fast-paced to stay one step ahead of the inner critic. Day two is focused on the project, where the completed work is manipulated into a journal where every page has its own foundation, ready for your personal entries. The composition of each layout is only the first of many discoveries that will take place as we review several methods for adding content to the painted backgrounds.

Painting can be a quiet, zenful activity, or it can be swift and messy where amusing and clever discoveries are made. Letting yourself work and play with paint will teach you valuable lessons when you listen to the medium and let it do most of the work. This is one of my favorite classes, first taught eight years ago, with loads of new tricks added since then, including spray painting. Even though I demonstrate the assignments, each artist’s interpretation is individual and their final journals are completely fabulous. Be ready to move fast and have fun. These explorations with acrylic will reveal many lessons you can apply to any of your mixed media interests, and will certainly jump-start or revive your enthusiasm for painting.

Studio & Material Fee:

Material fee covers the paper roll, a bag of tricks for textures, the supplies you’ll need to complete the journal binding and miscellaneous student supplies. If you have any questions please email Michelle.

Student Supplies:

Students should bring the following supplies:

1 or 2 inexpensive bristle (chip) brush
10 foam brushes
plastic spackle scraper or old credit card
old washcloth
small water bottle sprayer water
container for your brushes and paper plate for pouring paint
speedball brayer
box of Crayola crayons, count of 8 is enough
marking tools: pens, pencils, or markers
adhesive of your choice
bone folder
scissors, exacto knife, cutting mat
small swatch of sand paper
several small bottles (2 oz.) of inexpensive acrylic paint (please, leave your fancy Golden paints at home) : black is required, plus bring your favorite palette of color, at least four bottles
1 metallic gold or copper
small bottle of white gesso

Optional Supplies:

For day two you may want to bring a few xeroxed images (your choice) plus a collection of paper scraps from your stash and any of your favorite art journaling tools. You don't need a lot of stuff, instructor will have plenty of items for you to play with.

Cancellations:
While we understand that circumstances can arise causing a change in your plans, we must adhere to a business policy. Because it is impossible for Valley Ridge to favor one individual situation or circumstance over another, we must adhere to our policy in all situations and can make no exceptions to our cancellation policy.

45 Days or More prior to a workshop: Full refund of tuition, less a $75.00 cancellation fee.
44 Days or Less prior to a workshop: No refunds or credits for any reason.

Registration Fees:
The entire registration fee is due in full at time of registration. Valley Ridge Art Studio provides a $75 advance deposit option to make it easier for those with financial constraints to participate in our programs. The advance deposit fee secures your workshop space, and is applied to your entire workshop registration fee. Payment for your fee/materials balance will be charged to your credit card 45 days prior to workshop. Non-credit card payments will receive an invoice, which is due upon receipt.

Transfer Policy:
You may transfer out of a workshop to another program in the same season. Transfer request must be received at least 45 days prior to a program. There will be a $50.00 transfer fee assessed on each transfer.

Credit Card Transaction Reversal:
You intended to reserve a workshop and registered for one instead. You noticed your credit card was charged for the entire balance and only wanted to apply $75.00. You would like your credit card credited for the difference. We at Valley Ridge Art Studio are willing to reverse your transaction. There will be a $25.00 administrative fee per reversal request. Your balance will be due 45 days prior to the workshop.

I understand the risks associated with my attendance at the Studio and the use of various tools, equipment and products found in the Studio. I voluntarily agree to assume the risk of injury or illness or property damage that may arise out of my attendance at the Studio and use of tools, equipment and products found in the Studio and hereby waive and release the Studio and its members, affiliates, employees, and agents and assigns from any and all claims, actions or losses which I may suffer as a result of my attendance at and use of the Studio. I further agree to hold harmless, defend and indemnify the Studio and its members, affiliates, employees, and agents and assigns from any and all claims, actions or losses arising out of my attendance at and use of the Studio or use of the tools, equipment and products found in the Studio regardless of the cause, including but not limited to the negligence of the Studio or its members, affiliates, employees, and agents and assigns.

about the instructor

Michelle Ward enjoys getting messy with paint and paper in her home studio in New Jersey. She runs her own rubber stamp business, is a regular contributor to Somerset Studio, and has been published in several books on mixed media. Michelle says she enjoys teaching process workshops because that is where everyone learns valuable lessons planned and unplanned, including the teacher.
