VisualPoetry: Techniques in Digital Photomanipulation
Instructor: Susan Tuttle

Explore the magical world of digital art in this two-day workshop. We will use Adobe Photoshop Elements to manipulate single photos and create digital montages. On day one of the retreat, you will learn how to give your photos a retro/vintage feel, create diffused light effects, convert your images to black and white and sepia tones, apply textural layers for a grungy effect, and more (please note that I will be teaching projects that have not been shared in my online classes). On day two we will explore digital montage -- you will learn how to create landscapes with a composite of images, and fill these digital environments with figures, objects, props, etc, to create a surreal work of digital art that looks like a seamless photograph.

  Studio & Material Fee:
Material fee covers CD with "practice" imagery -- to practice each project/technique with the same imagery that is used before applying the technique to your own imagery and miscellaneous student supplies.

  Student Supplies:
Students should bring the following supplies:
  • A laptop with installed Photoshop Elements 6.0 or a newer version of Elements (7.0 or 8.0) is recommended. Don't forget your power cord. If you have an earlier version of Elements or an Adobe Photoshop/CS version, you would be able to carry out the projects, as long as you are very familiar with the tools and functions of your program (I will not be able to help folks with other versions navigate their programs, as we would lose teaching time).
  • The mouse for your laptop
  • 30-40 of your own photographs/personal imagery on CD or on your laptop hard drive. Include 15-20 photographs to be manipulated (day one of workshop) and 15-20 photos to be used for the montage part of the class (day two). For the montage photos, include photos of landscapes, textures, objects and props (like a chair, house, bird, balloon, jar, tree, candle, etc.) , and figures. For the figure photos, you can include some vintage photographs of people as well as photos you have taken (photos of people in dresses or costumes make excellent stock). I also recommend that some of your figure photos be full length body shots.

  Optional Supplies:

Wacom Intuis4 Graphics Tablet (medium-sized one) or similar product -- this is certainly not required, as you can use your mouse. If you currently have a graphics tablet set up to work with your laptop, feel free to bring it. If you decide to purchase one, just make sure you set it up to work with your laptop before the workshop.

Please note that there will be no instruction on how to set up/use the tablet during this workshop -- that is something you would need to do on your own prior to the workshop.
