60 Books, 60 Libraries
South Central Library System, Wisconsin
October 15, 2005 - August 15, 2006
Inspired by the 1,000 Journals Project, the 60
Journals, 60 Libraries initiative is a collaborative
art project that encourages the community to participate
in a unique social experiment. As part of the
Wisconsin Book Festival, members of the Bone Folders
Guild have created 60 blank artist's journals, one for
each library in the South Central Wisconsin Library
System. These libraries reach as far north as Wisconsin
Rapids and as far south as New Glarus. Library patrons
will contribute their thoughts, stories, comments and
art to these journals, creating an artist's book that
reflects the life in each community. |

Lessons in Conversation: Recent Bookworks by Members
of The Bone Folders Guild
February 1-April 15, 2005
When one of the members of the Madison-based book-arts
group The Bone Folders Guild acquired a 1950s
publication of The Ethel Cotton Course in
Conversation, Lesson 1-12 from a local out-of-print
bookstore, other members in the Guild felt compelled to
create artist-book responses to Cotton’s lessons in the
art of conversation, “the fascinating new way to win
poise, charm, personality.”
The results are the focus of this exhibition, and are as
diverse as the Bone Folders themselves: from Karen
Timm’s digitally-produced parody of Cotton’s structured
program to Carol Bjerke’s tunnel-book examination of
dementia and identity, and from Suzanne Berland’s
handmade-paper cornucopia of Cotton’s aphorisms to
Marilyn Wedberg’s plaster torso of conversation anxiety.
These works were first exhibited at the Kohler Art
Library in October 2004 in conjunction with the 3rd
annual Wisconsin Book Festival. The exhibit recalls the
etiquette of the 1950s, when the game of sparkling
conversation was considered a social art.
The exhibition includes twelve works by nine members of
The Bone Folders Guild:
- Suzanne Berland
- Carol Chase Bjerke
- Susan Carlson
- Nancee Wipperfurth Killoran
- Katherine Engen
- Linda Streifender
- Karen Timm
- Marilyn Wedberg
- Carey Weiler
Special Collections is located on the fourth floor of
UW-Milwaukee's Golda Meir Library, and is open
Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, or by appointment by
contacting 414.229.4345 or
