Letters to Valley Ridge
Wonderful, fabulous, great food (i ate too much), learned a lot, enjoyed the scenery (immensely), the other students, the teacher, Katherine''s ever-flowing humor and graciousness and electric personality, (Katherine - you were BORN for the work you are doing!!) Just astoundingly satisfying and enriching experience!!!

It's a beautiful setting, the facilities are top-notch, Katherine does an amazing job of seeing to it that every needed thing is there for us. Before I came I kept thinking, "I''m crazy to be doing this when I have so many other places for my money to go" but at this end of the time I have no regrets. In fact, had I spent the money on those other things, I would not now have the sense of peaceful restoration of spirits and eagerness to continue my art making. Money can always be found for things but money can''t buy the sum total of this experience. "Cheap at twice the price," as my dad used to say.

Driving as a first-timer to the retreat down into winding, ever-deepening valleys of unglaciered, pine tree-covered hills large enough to qualify as small mountains was kind of mystical, and the charming barns, silos and farmhouses with pastures of cows that dotted this picturesque countryside felt like stepping back into before-techno-time, like going back to Real. The occasional creek, the floating puffs of cloud in the blue-blue sky, locals crossing the road wearing real clothes instead of required fashion uniforms, farm dogs and kittens here and there, peace, stillness and quiet -- they were kind of magical. But when I passed a little knoll sitting like The Thinker on a rock ledge up high in the rising woods alongside the gravel road where some whimsical & humorous soul had perched him for passersby to perhaps notice, I knew I was entering a friendly storybook. The Valley Ridge Art Studio proved to be the next great chapter.

Valley Ridge is probably THEE best workshop facility I've EVER worked in. Plenty of space for each student (I loved having my own table!) plus, plenty of outlets (situated so no one was tripping over cords all week) and top notch industrial-strength tools provided (paper cutter, etc.) The lunches were delicious, and I appreciated the coffee plus the wine and cheese breaks (twice!) I liked it that supplies were available for those of us who didn't have whatever it was we needed (or thought we needed!) Everything went smoothly because the facility was well-thought out/laid out.

I have come home with a great feeling inside me! 3 days of intense art making is definitely a good thing. Having coffee and lunch provided everyday is great - no worries, just make art. The meals were delicious and healthy and comforting. You run a great program at Valley Ridge - it was an oasis of creativity for me. I would love to return.

The studio is in a lovely location. Kathy, you are so warm and hospitable! You made the work environment really pleasurable. The drinks, snacks, cheese, wine, etc. were just great. The class could not have been better. Richard was a wonderful teacher and the class environment was beautiful. Because of this experience, I feel re-energized and ready to try the many new techniques that I have learned. It was a great environment in which to learn.

Where do I start..... I enjoyed the total experience. From the moment I arrived I was welcomed. I received orientation to the studio and surroundings, allowing me to feel immediately comfortable and relaxed. The surroundings are beautiful and Bill and Kathy were the ultimate hosts.
The noon meals were fabulous, there were beverages available at all times, and the studio was the perfect workspace. Staying at the farmhouse was a delight in itself. Everything was clean and attractively decorated with original art pieces everywhere you looked. Every detail was attended to and I was so comfortable staying there.
The class itself was beyond my expectations and I simply loved it. It was one of the best art workshop experiences I have ever had. The total package including the stunningly beautiful surroundings, the fabulous hosts, the outstanding teacher and wonderful classmates was just great !!!!

I was very impressed with the setting--the beautiful countryside, and the bright airy classroom. Good lighting and a comfortable temperature are MUST HAVES! Bottomless cupsof coffee, great food, great people.
All of that allowed me to produce a piece that even surprised me! Not knowing what to expect meant that I didn''t know exactly to pack, so I showed up with minimal supplies. But the atmosphere just allowed my creativity to flow, and despite my lack of ''stuff'' or chatchkies I came home with a piece that I am extremely happy with! That always makes me happy--when I come home with something finished!Zhulia Abrok, You Have Your Charms, Knot Now Nina attendee

I feel like a different person when I'm at Valley Ridge I'm NOT thinking about work which is a very difficult thing for me to do. I am HAPPY! I am having FUN! I am aspiring to learn, learn and learn more. I cannot finish here without mentioning Bill. He is the man behind the scenes. I think someone referred to him as the mighty OZ behind the curtain. He is as much a part of the weekend as anyone and am always happy to see him walk through the studio door to tell us that lunch is ready.

As in every class I''ve ever taken at Valley Ridge, my expectations were once again exceeded. Valley Ridge is such a safe, nurturing environment to learn & create art, and being a VR oldtimer, it just feels like home to me. Each year you bring in new instructors (to me, anyway), keeping things fresh and exciting, making me want to come back again & again. Misty had a lot of knowledge to share, so having this class on the smaller side, worked perfectly as we all got plenty of individual instruction and also made it easier to chat with the other classmates. It was fun, I loved everything about it

Kathy and Bill.....I just wanted to thank you both {for once again} giving me an unbelievable weekend !!! I can''t begin to tell you how much fun I had and of course, how much I learned {and of course how much my cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so hard} Misty is a blessing...what a wonderful soul she is, with a heart so large and so full !!!......I was impressed with her in so many ways !!! Her talent and her willingness to help everyone, was above and beyond any other instructor I''ve had so far.....she was so warm and gentle and constantly and consistently "there" for all of us!!!!! What a hands on person she is.....and her demonstrations were completely amazing, full of new ideas and different ways to work {as I''m now in love with razor blades} easy to understand and had a "wow" factor to them.....and gave me, at least, the hope that someday, I too, will be able to paint an amazing face !!!!.....I SO hope she returns next year, as I for one, think she is an amazing addition to YOUR "ONE of a kind VALLEY RIDGE !!!!"....I''m so excited for your next class tomorrow, as they will be walking into "heaven" for the next 48 hours !!!!.....Hugs to you both, BETH

The community room and the food at lunch was MOST excellent. Couldn''t ask for anything better. I really enjoy that the studio is out in the middle of a field, it is just breath-taking and inspiring to drive to the studio each day. I come to Valley Ridge to learn from artists who have done the trial and error and have figured things out that I don''t know how to do. Like painting effects, attaching things, making texture, So far, I have yet to be disappointed in any of the workshops I''ve attended. It is also nice to be surrounded by other students who are respectful and generous with their praise and comments about your work.

Unbelievable! I didn''t think it could top last year''s experience, but surprisingly it did! The addition of "the Gathering Room" was a real plus. The 5pm wine and cheese makes for the perfect break as well as bonding time. Overall it was a much-welcomed experience...from start to finish! I arrived stressed to the max, feeling like my cup was half-empty, and left with it overflowing! The only negative aspect was leaving...the time goes much too fast! Again, the food was sublime, Kathy and Bill were awesome, DJ couldn''t have been sweeter, the new house tour was unbelievable, the view fantastic, and the weather gorgeous! What else could a person ask for??? Valley Ridge is a true treasure.

Did I mention how much fun that was? I thought Michael deMeng last summer was the most fun I ever had without wearing my pajamas, but I have come to realize that artists are nuts--how cool is that? I have been telling everyone all day today at work that the Farm is a place where I can really just relax and not worry about anything. Really, it is like the journal--if I don''t like something--I can just cover it up with another layer.

Your property and studio were so inspirational, Kathy. I must say that this was a large factor in how I felt over the entire weekend. You were so organized that it never felt like we got off schedule. What a wonderful place you and Bill have put together. Its evident the amount of time and hard work youve put in to making sure that its not just another class that someone is taking, but an entire experience. I am so glad I found Valley Ridge and am anxious to continue attending workshops in the years to come.

Everything was ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS DARLING! I loved the whole entire weekend. You are so warm and welcoming. You put everyone at ease immediately and created a lovely, nurturing space both physically and spiritually for all participants to express themselves and their creativity to their hearts delight. I felt as if I have known you forever! I had the pleasure participating in a Susan Lenart Kazmer three day workshop in October. The experience of being immersed in an intensive workshop was inspiring and exhilarating. The class size was kept small allowing for lots of individual attention. The owner, Kathy Engen, was there to assist wherever she could, and the studio provides ample workspace as well as a small market where forgotten supplies or little extras can be purchased. Many students took advantage of the fact that the studio is left open after class to work late into the night. Other amenities included the scenic view of the valley, a refrigerator stocked with beverages, chocolate and other tasty treats, and scrumptious lunches shared with the artist and fellow students. Valley Ridge Art Studio provides a totally affirmative environment in which to learn and create.

I am always impressed with the class sizes at Valley Ridge. They are perfect! Not too big and not too small. It gives you a chance to really get to know the other students this way. I used to have an art studio with a friend in downtown Waukesha years ago and while I do love my home studio, what I miss most is the sharing of ideas and the energy that came from having other artists "drop in" and talk about art. Now I feel that I can get that much needed sharing at Valley Ridge. Also, it is good to know that there are other "quirky" people out there like me so when I come back to my real life I don''t feel so different. :)
I always feel very welcome by you and Bill and am so impressed with the wonderful lunches that you provide. Always such a delight to hear Bill describe the choices of the day. And Kathy, as I said before, I am amazed at how organized you are. You truly eat, sleep and drink it, and I want you to know that your efforts don''t go unnoticed. Great, Great job! Participating in a workshop at The Valley Ridge Art Studio is incredible. Light pours in from the windows providing a bright, cheery atmosphere. The buildings are nestled in the rolling hills of Southern Wisconsin. There is such a relaxed, peaceful feeling. How lovely it would be to sit in the summer sun to read, to paint, to make quilt tops. But, the women came to learn and work. And, it was an intense, focused group of artists and students.

I liked the nice personal space we had to work on in the studio. I know I speak for all artists when I say that we need our elbow room to spread out and that was definitely the case. I also enjoyed the freedom to work at our own pace. There was one point where I just needed to stretch and so I took a short walk up the road. It was really very pleasant. I've been searching for the right words to articulate my experience at Valley Ridge.
I want to say things like Transformative,

I had the most wonderful time at Valley Ridge this weekend! I had always heard from friends what a great place Valley Ridge is, and they were absolutely right. There was so much creative energy in the studio! Everyone encouraged and supported each other whether they were having an artistic triumph or a creative low. This was an important and rich experience for me. I have been searching for a process such as DJ's fusing technique for a long time and I know I will use it over and over. I loved making connections with other artists - seeing a wide

visiting about ideas. I think the beautiful rural setting adds to the whole experience.

This was, hands down, the best art experience of my life. The group dynamics were special, as we all worked towards the common goal of building a village. You know that I don''t always work the best in a class-I learn and then apply it when I get home, more than worry about doing a finished product in class. But in this case, I immediately wanted to be making something and be a part of what you could feel right away was going to be a unique experience. There really are no words to adequately describe this particular class, but there are memories now that will be with me forever. I don''t know exactly what happened
or why, but whatever it was, if one could bottle it & sell it-they''d be the richest person on earth! And I feel like the luckiest person ever, to have had the opportunity to be a part of

What an absolutely divine three days, even if I do need another three days to recover. This workshop was a good combination of process and product -- we learned several different
techniques but also worked quietly on what became very personal and emotional
creations. All the things I said a few weeks ago still hold true -- Kathy and Bill have created such an exquisite and welcoming
place to gather and create art. I feel very thankful to be able to partake in such generosity. Lunch is fabulous -- everyone ought to treat themselves and have lunch, AND save room for dessert. And to be able to
learn from so many different people- - not just
the instructors that Kathy gathers from all parts of the U.S., but each participant, who brings their own interesting supplies and knowledge to share -- it all contributes to the
very inspiring and creative place that is Valley
Ridge. Thanks and kudos to Kathy and Bill and Nina! Oh, and Bear too.

Karen Timm did a great job of inspiring me, and knew when to give us room to work, and when to step in to offer ideas. It is a fine art to know how to let students make their own discoveries, but

I really enjoyed this class. I have some new ideas and techniques to work into my own artwork, and yet somehow not too many that I feel overwhelmed by it all. I thought hard about which classes to take and I feel rewarded that I picked one that works well with the direction that I am going in, whatever that is. Of course the setting of Valley Ridge is absolutely divine. You and Bill are such lovely and generous hosts that it is a
pleasure to spend time at Valley Ridge. The class was very challenging but rewarding, exhausting, but definitely worth it.Laura Komai, Acrylic Manipulations, Experiments with Watermedia Attendee

My Valley Ridge experience was wonderful. You (and Bill) are the consummate
hosts....you both live and breathe a customer-focused dedication that is evident in everything from the full fridge and gourmet lunches to the stunning bathroom. The classmates are always a highlight ... interesting, giving artists...there to
refresh and restore. And I learn a lot...and my art gets better. Cool! My art weekend always includes Jean's farm....which is just the best companion piece to Valley Ridge...staying at the farm ensures that the weekend will be a true girls' get away...full of laughter and politics!Leslie Agnello-Dean, Acrylic Manipulations, Experiments with Watermedia Attendee

It is an oasis in a busy world. I like how you are set apart from our usual work a day world. It is a real escape. Wonderful. We all appreciate all the work that goes into making our experiences the best. It does not go unnoticed. Yummy lunches included!

I had a such wonderful weekend, as always. I have yet to have a disappointing class or experience. It was great all around. Dan was so helpful, and generous with his time and knowledge. I can't believe that he gave the extra class on the caterpillar stitch. It takes a lot of patience to deal with so many people with such differing sets of skills and wide variety of personalities. As always, Valley Ridge is a magical place. Seeing that spectacular sunset with the double rainbow and pink cows! What more can you ask for? You and Bill always make me feel so welcomed and 'at home'.

Classes at Valley Ridge are the best part of summer. The instructors, the classes, the participants, the wonderful hospitality... It's great. Thank you for making such a splendid creative space and opening it to us.

Just loved it. The generous hospitality of Kathy and Bill is relaxing after all the creating and work involved - it's just a pleasant place to be even before the workshop starts.

This workshop, the instructor, the location, the food, and the hosts were all fabulous! I had a great time. I felt like I had been at summer camp for 4 days. I have yet to wipe the smile off of my face. Kathy and Bill, you two definitely went above and beyond for this
workshop and it was very much appreciated. The additional meals, the walks, and the ride up to watch the sunset on the hill made for a complete experience that will be hard to beat. I am passing the word to anyone who might be interested in your workshops, as well as anyone who will listen to me.Chris Smith, Bead, Books & Paint! Attendee

I had a fantastic experience. I was certainly
tired by the time I left on Monday. But I still feel like it was (by far) the best workshop I''ve ever taken.Lisa Binkley, Bead, Books & Paint! Attendee

As always, VR is a honey of a place!!! It is like a second home to me and I imagine to
quite a few others. You are such a wonderful hostess, Kathy, and everyone feels so
welcome and relaxed. This is Wisconsin''s best kept secret for altered artists!
SHHHHHHH. But you deserve all the praise and the business and I hope you can continue for years and years.Lisa Cook, Solder Alchemy Instructor

It was so good to see you
this weekend and enjoy your
wonderful Studio
environment. I loved the
changes you have made in the
studio! It was so open and
roomy - very nice
improvements! Your business
is a gift to all of us whose
lives are enriched by all the
creative artists you bring to
share with us and the overall
nourishing environment you
provide with setting,
facilities, garden, and yummy
lunches. Even Bill and Bear
are very much a wonderful
part of the whole
experience! It definitely
fulfills a 'soul' need for
those of us who come - I sure
know it does for me and for
many who I observe along side
me in the classes. I also
really enjoyed hearing more
of your own story this trip -
and I have no doubt that all
those happenings leading you
to where you are now, full
time CEO of Valley Ridge Art
Studio, are no accident! (we
don't believe in accidents do
we?!!) Well, I'll move on to
my reminder now, but I
definitely wanted to take the
opportunity to recognize the
gift you are to your workshop
patrons.Cindy Bonebright, Acrylic Manipulation: Experiments with Watermedia Attendee

Kathy, the new workshop space
is simply stunning...open,
airy, and filled with light--
the perfect atmosphere for
inducing creativity! Whether
it''s hanging up one''s coat
(love those twigs), taking a
bathroom/gallery break, or
having a delicious, healthy
lunch, you make everything at
Valley Ridge an artful,
colorful experience. Your
special small touches are
never overlooked either, from
decorated workshop info
envelopes coming to us or
very cool handmade name
tags...even my coffee cream
comes out of a coy little
elf! But as always, your
delightful personality and
spirit are what really give
Valley Ridge its friendly
enchantment and is in great
part why so many of us keep
coming back over and over
again..Linda Warlyn, Solder Alchemy Attendee
